Do I need to be enrolled in the course?

Yes. It reads the courses in your own Udemy account and acts inside your logged-in session. It cannot unlock, download, or give access to anything you have not already enrolled in.

What does the free limit count?

Completed courses, not lectures — five of them, for the lifetime of the account. It does not reset daily or monthly, so the count you see is the count you have left.

Is the licence a subscription?

No. It is a one-time $9 payment for lifetime access. After paying you get a licence key by email, and you can activate with either that key or your purchase email.
